Church of the Saviour and LGBTQIA+ Inclusion

This paper analyzes conversations around LGBTQIA+ inclusion within the United Methodist Church at the congregational level. It was approached with an ethnographic method. This allowed me to use a mixture of insider and outsider experience to determine how pastoral leaders function as opinion leaders and how small group conversations around difficult issues create homogeneity of thought and reduce conflict. My findings suggest that the United Methodist Church as a whole could use the process established in the studied congregation with some adaptation to lessen the tension around the issue of human sexuality.
