Case 39


Lillith is originally going to be sent to the children's home, but she begs Emily to look after her instead, and with the agreement of the board, Emily is assigned to take care of Lillith until a suitable foster family comes along. Two weeks after Lillith moves in with Emily, a boy named Diego (Alexander Conti), another one of Emily's cases, brutally murders his parents in the middle of the night, and Detective Barron informs Emily that somebody phoned Diego the night before the crime, and that the call originated from her home.

After realizing that her closest colleagues have been eliminated and that the rest of her cases will be next, Emily serves Lillith tea spiked with a sedative pills and waits for her to fall asleep. While Lillith is asleep, Emily douses her home in gasoline and sets it ablaze, hoping to kill Lillith. However, Lillith, upon discovering Emily's plot, escapes unharmed.

Stressed social worker Emily Jenkins (Renee Zellweger) is assigned one more case in addition to the 38 she already has, a young girl named Lilith (Jodelle Ferland). Emily visits the home and discovers that the girl's parents are showing signs of abuse. Emily decides to take Lilith in until a good foster home can be found -- but unfortunately, everyone around Emily quickly begins dying, starting with her psychologist friend, Doug (Bradley Cooper). Emily starts to believe that maybe Lilith is the problem, rather than her parents. Can she get anyone to believe her before it's too late?


Emily Jenkins (Renee Zellweger) is a social worker with a heart. That is why she not only removes Lilith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) from her physically abusive parents, but also brings the young girl into her own house until a foster family can be arranged. However, the case is even more serious than Emily realizes, and her emotional response is about to bring the real danger home.


Not too long after Lillith moves in, strange things begin to happen around Emily. Two weeks later, another of Emily's cases, a boy named Diego (Alexander Conti), suddenly murders his parents with a crowbar, and Barron informs Emily that somebody phoned Diego from her house the night before the crime. As she is suspected of involvement in the incident, Lillith undergoes a psychiatric evaluation by Emily's best friend, Douglas J. Ames (Bradley Cooper). During the session, however, Lillith turns the evaluation around, asking Douglas what his fears are and subtly threatening him. That night after receiving a strange phone call, Douglas is panicked by a mass of hornets coming out of his body in hysteria and kills himself in the bathroom.

However, the girl apparently escapes unharmed (from this point on, the audience may wonder whether Lilith is really present or Emily is hallucinating her presence). A police officer offers to escort Emily and Lillith to a temporary place to sleep. As Emily is following the police cars, she suddenly takes a different route and drives her car at a high speed, hoping to bring fear to Lillith. Instead, Lillith forces Emily to relive her childhood memory of her mother driving fast in a rainstorm. Emily fights through the memory, telling herself that it is not real. The image fades, and Lillith appears scared by the fact that Emily was able to fight through their illusions.


Case 39 is a 2009 thriller and horror movie made by Christian Alvart with Renée Zellwegger. It tells the story of a social worker, Emily Jenkins, who is on the case of a young and mysterious girl named Lillith "Lily" Sullivan whose parents apparently abused her. In a gest of kind gesture, she decides to host Lillith in her house. And from there, the problems begin.


Case 39 reinforces the stereotype that all social workers are child protective service workers, which does not expose the public and the media to our colleagues who work in administration, policy, politics, etc. Additionally, this film also highlights the banal perception of a social worker as a harried and frazzled individual, overwhelmed with too high of a caseload and inundated with stacks of case files.

This is a case of an 11 year old boy with Fibular hemimelia Type IA who had been followed for 4 years. He then underwent tibial lengthening with a standard Ilizarov frame. He developed poor regenerate bone formation that was addressed with the accordion technique, and targeted lengthening was reached. However, 2 weeks after removal of the fixator, he sustained a fracture of the regenerate that was treated with elastic nailing. He subsequently underwent distal medial hemi-epiphysiodesis of the femur on the affected side.
