Best Buy Stove Hoods

Consumer Reports does not test range hoods at this time, but the best hoods we tested in the past excelled at containing and exhausting smoke and fumes and exchanging air. Some were also notably quieter than others and better at delivering high and low levels of lighting.

Undercabinet hoodsThese mount under the bottom of a wall cabinet above the cooktop. Ductwork inside an adjoining wall, chase, soffit, or ceiling can exhaust smoke and fumes outside. In some models, a shallow hood slides out of the upper kitchen cabinet when you need it. Typical kitchen cabinets extend only about halfway across the cooktop, so this extension routes steam and smoke away from cabinet faces and back toward the suction end of the range hood.

Wall-mounted chimney hoodsThese hoods are an option when there are no cabinets over the range. Their exposed vent stacks, which vent cooking gases outside, can make a strong design statement.

Island hoodsIsland hood models are mounted to and vented through ductwork in the ceiling. Because they lack a wall or cabinets alongside them to help funnel fumes, they should be wider than the cooking surface.

Ductless hoodsThis type of installation draws steam, heat, and smoke from the cooktop, filters it, and returns it to the room. Its filters trap oil and grease droplets dispersed into the air above the range, and some models include an optional carbon filter to reduce odors. We do not recommend ductless hoods, because they do not actually exhaust contaminants outside.

Thermostat controlA built-in temperature sensor in some models automatically turns on the fan if the temperature below the hood gets too high. This feature is standard on over-the-range microwaves, to prevent the microwave electronics from getting damaged by high temperatures. If the temperature under the microwave is too high, the exhaust fan comes on to draw away the hot air and pull in cooler air from the rest of the kitchen. We do not recommend this feature on range hoods, however, because in the event a grease fire triggers the fan, it could intensify the flame by drawing more air toward it.

Similarly, depending on the size of your kitchen or your home, you may be limited in what types of range hoods you can purchase. A wall-mounted range hood might be difficult to accommodate in a small kitchen or apartment, for example, while a microwave or under-cabinet range hood will not make sense if you have a large kitchen in need of plentiful ventilation.

Range hoods can produce a lot of noise. Some models are louder than others, and some are quieter than average. The level of sound that range hoods make is measured in sones or decibels. Any sound level below 13 sones or 65 decibels is considered tolerable for a range hood.

A wall-mounted range hood can be installed over a cooking surface so long as no existing cabinetry presents a problem (if some does, take a look at under-cabinet range hoods instead). Like the name says, the unit is mounted against the wall and is typically ducted, though it is possible to find ductless versions. Available in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes, wall-mounted range hoods are also known as chimney hoods since the overall design and ventilation system is similar to that of a chimney.

Under-cabinet range hoods are installed underneath existing cabinetry. They come in both ducted and ductless systems (in the case of the former, ductwork is typically routed through the closest wall or ceiling before reaching the exhaust vent). Under-cabinet range hoods are generally smaller in size and lighter in weight than a full-size range hood. These are a great choice for everyday cooks in apartments and homes where preserving cabinet space is a priority.

Downdraft range hoods make for a sleek and stylish addition to your kitchen, especially because they are often installed as pop-up vent units hidden except when used. In theory, these operate by redirecting any smoke or air downward, where it is ventilated out of your home through a ductwork system in your floor. Though convenient for island stove tops, where it is not practical to install an island range hood, downdraft range hoods lack power and are the least efficient way to remove pollutants including smoke from your kitchen.

If your microwave is installed over your stovetop, chances are you have a microwave range hood: that is, the fan is built directly into the underside of the microwave. This type of range hood is convenient, cheaper than installing a separate range hood (since you typically purchase only one appliance) and space efficient. A microwave range hood unit features a recirculating, ductless ventilation system where air is vented back into your home after being filtered. While popular, microwave range hoods are not as powerful or effective at filtering air as a ducted range hood.

Yes, you can vent your range hood through a wall if you have a compatible ductwork set-up. Though venting through an exterior wall is more common, with the proper precautions it is also possible to vent your range hood through an interior wall. Make sure you are not venting into a space where the contaminated air will build up. Also keep in mind that some types of range hoods cannot be vented through a wall due to design: island range hoods must be vented through a ceiling and downdraft range hoods must be vented through the floor.

The over the range microwave is designed to be tucked away neatly above your stove. It often comes with a built-in ventilation system that clears the air as you cook. It is a superhero that saves valuable space on your kitchen countertops and clears away nasty grease and odors.

An over the range microwave is a space-saver that hangs over your stove attached to the kitchen cabinets on the side and on it top. It incorporates ventilation and stovetop lights. All in all, you will free up precious counter space with this type of microwave while getting a relief from smoke, odor, and grease.

An over the range microwave is not a microwave drawer. Also, it is not designed to be used on top of a counter. Most recently, speed ovens gained popularity in high-end kitchens. Although these innovative products satisfy popular microwave functions, you will not be able to place them over a stove.

This Whirlpool model also has a steam cook option, which requires a separate steam accessory to work. When in use, you can effortlessly steam vegetables and rice without having to turn on your stove. It has a 3-speed, 300 CFM ventilation system to reduce cooking odors. This model also features a CleanRelease Non-Stick Interior for quick, painless clean-up!

The Cafe CVM517P4MW2 exudes true glamour and excellence. If you are looking for a microwave that breaks the mold and adds flair to your kitchen design, this Cafe model may be for you. But aside from its stylish design, this model is a powerhouse with both standard and convection technology. In fact, the fast cook setting even combines the best of both technologies!

Properly cleaning a range hood involves removing build-up from the exterior of the hood, as well as the filter inside. Start by removing the filter from the range hood. Many popular range hoods have permanent filters that are dishwasher-safe. You can either place the filter in your dishwasher for a quick and easy clean or use dishwashing liquid, hot water, and a soft nylon brush to thoroughly scrub the filter. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.

How to clean the hood depends on the type of material. Most metal hoods can be cleaned with a degreaser. Use a clean cloth with warm water to rinse all surfaces after they have been cleaned. The exterior of the hood can also be cleaned with a degreaser and soft cloth, except in the case of decorative wooden hoods, which should be dusted on a weekly basis.

A range hood needs to be installed at the right height to work effectively without hindering your access to the cooktop. Ulatowski suggests that an ideal height in most kitchen configurations is about 30 inches above the stovetop but no less than 24 inches.

Stainless steel is the most common material used for range hoods and it happens to be a very durable material that can take a beating. Plus, since stainless steel is so abundant in kitchens, most cleaners and degreasers are designed with that material in mind.
